William Ross Strike  (1895 ~ 1987)

 

4.8.1.1. First child of Ella M. Elford and Harvey Strike, William Ross Strike, was born June 24, 1895, in Carrying Place, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario.

  He married Eloie Graham Casselman, daughter of Henry Arthur Casselman and Agnes Graham, August 10, 1921, in Morrisburg, Williamsburgh Twp., Dundas Co., Ontario and had two children: 

 

  • (4.8.1.1.1)  William Ross  (1924 ~ 1941)      

  • (4.8.1.1.2)  Arthur Alan Harvey  (1928 ~ 2013) 

 

  W. Ross Strike died March 15, 1987, aged 92 years and Eloie G. Casselman Strike died July 17, 1968, aged 72 years in Bowmanville, Ontario and are interred at Bowmanville Cemetery.

W. Ross Strike

June 24, 1895 ~ March 15, 1987

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, March 18), at the Morris Funeral Chapel for W. Ross Strike, former chairman of Ontario Hydro.

  Mr. Strike died at the age of 92 in Memorial Hospital Sunday, March 15, 1987.

  Born in Prince Edward County in 1895, he received his early education in public and high schools of various Eastern Ontario Towns where his father, Rev. Alfred Strike, was a Methodist minister.

  He entered law in 1914, but had his career interrupted by service in the First World War. He was wounded twice during his service in France and was awarded the French Medaille Militaire at Vimy Ridge.

  Upon his return from the war, he graduated from Osgoode Hall in the veterans’ class of 1920.

  He practiced law first in Toronto and later in Perth and Bowman-ville.

  In 1932, he was elected mayor of Bowmanville, a position heheld until 1936. And it was during his term in municipal office that he became active in the local Hydro Commission.

 He was elected president of the eastern Ontario Municipal Electrical Association in 1935, later serving as president of the Ontario Municipal Electrical Association.

 While president of the O.M.E.A., Ross Strike was appointed a commissioner of Ontario Hydro. He became first vice-chairman in 1956 and on June 1, 1961, he was appointed as Hydro’s ninth chairman. That same year, he was named Electrial Man of the Year.

  Mr. Strike served as chairman of Ontario Hydro until 1966, when he retired from the post.

  His 30 years of public service also included a number of activities within the Bowmanville community. He was Sunday School superintendent at Trinity United Church for 29 years. In addition, he was active in sports, serving as the first president of the Bowmanville Tennis Club and also as the first president of the Bowmanville Badminton Club. He was also an avid curler and golfer.

He was a member of the Masonic Order and was a member and past president of the Bowmanville Rotary Club.

  Ross Strike was predeceased by his wife, Eloie (Casselman). He is survived by his son, Alan.

  The funeral service was held in the Morris Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m.
