Byron S. Vanstone, former Chairman of the Board of The Toronto-Dominion Bank died Tuesday in Toronto after a brief illness.
Born in Tyrone, Ontario, in 1884, Mr. Vanstone’s banking career spanned a period of 56 years. He was raised and educated in Bowmanville, Ontario and joined the Ontario Bank there in 1900 and six years later joined The Bank of Toronto in Toronto. In subsequent years he held a succession of increasingly important positions including Inspector, Supervisor of Ontario Branches and Chief Supervisor Eastern Branches. In his more then half a century as a banker Mr. Vanstone saw Canada come of age as a nation. At the time of his retirement as Chairman he remarked that, “The great advance in commerce and finance in Canada could not have occurred if it had not been built around growing strength in the banking system.”
The last public appearance made in Bowmanville by Mr. Vanstone was when he officiated at the opening of the new Bowmanville branch of the Toronto-Dominion Bank in March, 1958, fulfilling a dream nurtured by him for many years.
A keen athlete in his youth, Mr. Vanstone’s interest in athletics continued throughout his life and he was an active golfer and curler. He was a member of the National, York, Toronto Hunt and Granite Clubs, the Toronto Golf Club and the Toronto Board of Trade and an active member of the Board of Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church, Toronto.
